Introducing Megan and her role supporting athletes through counseling

Megan Cannon

Licensed Professional Counselor Associate

I am a former Division I college soccer player, so I understand the intensity, physical and emotional strain it takes to compete at an elite level. Beyond sports, I spent 12 years as a school counselor, proudly serving teens and their families with their educational, social, and mental well-being needs. I enjoyed many years as a high school and club soccer coach and have a deep appreciation for those who give their time and energy to sports. To this day, I’m an educator at heart and love sharing knowledge about mental health with my community.

Introducing Megan and her role supporting athletes through counseling
Megan Cannon, LPC-A

I’m Megan Cannon, owner and therapist. I created Carolina Counseling for Athletes because I believe athletes deserve a place where they don’t have to perform, pretend they’re fine, or figure it all out on their own.READ BIO

OUR MISSION

We help athletes navigate the mental side of sports, build confidence, and care for their whole selves—because we believe every athlete is more than their performance.

Life Beyond

Counseling

I’ve come a long way since my playing days. Back then, life was centered around sport and it felt like I had little time for anything else. Now I know we make time for the things that are important to us. Making time for me is now a priority. The more I care for myself, the better I show up for others.

My interests go far beyond sports performance; on any given day you can find me learning about brain health, parenting, ADHD, youth sports, entrepreneurship, nutrition, fitness, and education. On days when I need to recharge, I love to ride my bike, go to the beach, read and spend time with family and friends. But, to be totally honest. A typical weekend is probably spent on the ballfield or court, coaching my kids and trying to be a normal sports mom.

And I wouldn’t have it any other way.

My

Approach

My approach to therapy is one that it tailored to your needs, utilizing evidence-based interventions that lend heavy into the relational work that we will do. Common modalities I use are Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Relational Therapy, Solution-Focused and Brainspotting.

I offer a supportive space for healing and growth with realness, directness and collaboration. I love being on your team! I appreciate the diverse backgrounds of my clients, celebrating each person's uniqueness with care and compassion.

I offer integrated Christian counseling upon request, as I welcome all spiritual disciplines and honor the ability to choose your own faith journey. Together, we can explore how your beliefs support or hinder how you are showing up in life each and every day.

The first word friends would use to describe me is competitive. Sports have shaped much of who I am, with basketball and soccer serving as my foundation, and a lifelong involvement in competitive environments influencing my growth both personally and professionally. I understand the internal drive to improve, the pressure to perform, and the identity that can form around being an athlete. Through my graduate training in Sport & Performance Psychology and applied work with collegiate programs, I have supported athletes across sports, including baseball, basketball, football, golf, rowing, and softball. I have also served as a leader within the sport community, coaching youth soccer and educating athletes, trainers, coaches and officials on mental health awareness, recognizing signs and symptoms of distress, and teaching practical tools to respond effectively for themselves or others in crisis. I am passionate about helping athletes and high performers build mental skills, deepen self-awareness, and develop a sustainable relationship with competition and achievement.

Life Beyond

Counseling

While achievement and growth are important to me, I believe sustainable performance requires a full and balanced life. One of my favorite ways to care for my own mental health is taking my five-year-old Goldendoodle Remy on long walks. She is a certified therapy dog and, when appropriate, can even join sessions to offer added comfort and grounding!

Outside of counseling, I love baking and cooking for friends and family, reading and participating in book clubs, staying active, and keeping up with all things Clemson athletics as a proud third-generation Tiger. Community, movement, learning, and connection fuel me, and I bring that same grounded energy into the therapy space.

My

Approach

My approach to counseling is holistic and individualized. I integrate modalities and techniques from multiple philosophies based on each client’s unique needs, combining evidence-based strategies with meaningful relational work. I lean heavily on Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and psychodynamic therapy, blending practical skill-building with deeper exploration of childhood learning, developmental relationships, and core schemas that influence present behavior patterns.

For many athletes and high performers, early messages from coaches, parents, or competitive environments shape how they relate to success, failure, authority, and even themselves. A coach’s emphasis on toughness, a parent’s high expectations, or early reinforcement tied only to winning can quietly form beliefs such as “I am only valuable when I perform” or “Mistakes mean I’ve failed.” Together, we identify these patterns and evaluate whether they are still serving you.

My style is warm, collaborative, and supportively challenging. I help clients uncover the missing or out-of-place puzzle pieces in their mindset, build mental skills, and develop healthier, more sustainable ways of thinking and performing, both in sport and in life beyond it.

What is IN with us.

Seeing the Whole Athlete
We look beyond performance to understand the person —including mental health, identity, relationships, and life beyond sport.

Individualized Support
No two athletes are the same. We tailor therapy to each athlete’s experiences, goals, challenges, and needs.

Mental Health + Performance
We believe mental health and performance go hand in hand. We help athletes care for both without sacrificing their well-being.

Real, Practical Support
Therapy should feel useful. We combine evidence-based approaches with practical tools athletes can actually use on the field, in the classroom or work, and in everyday life.

Making Room for Play
Therapy doesn’t always mean sitting and talking. We incorporate games, movement, and creativity to help athletes connect and work through what’s going on.

What is OUT with us.

“Just Be Mentally Tough”
We don’t believe athletes should have to push through everything, hide what they’re feeling, or handle it all on their own.

Defining Athletes by Performance
Your stats, playing time, wins, losses, or achievements don’t determine your worth. You are more than what you produce.

One-Size-Fits-All Therapy
We believe in the power of family and ensure caregivers are actively involved in the therapeutic process for holistic healing.

Choosing Between Mental Health and Performance
You shouldn’t have to choose between being mentally healthy and pursuing your goals. We believe you can care deeply about performance and care for yourself.

The “Sit Here and Talk About Your Feelings” Approach
We’re not interested in forcing athletes into a therapy experience that doesn’t feel natural. Therapy can look different—and sometimes that means playing, moving, creating, or doing something that helps you open up.
